ABOUT THE ARTIST

Armed with a BFA from University of Alberta, artist Tanya Petruk arrived in Toronto in 1998. She started with a broadcast graphics artist job on the show Exhibit A: Secrets of Forensic Science. As the internet industry grew, Tanya worked in web content design for seven years. Striking out on her own, she launched an internet boutique, Blue Blankie.com in 2005, which operated for four years until Tanya decided to pursue visual art full time.

Tanya has participated in numerous art shows and her work is enjoyed in private collections worldwide. She taught art classes in her studio and for Whitby Community Connections then joined Backing To The Future, preserving and restoring vintage movie posters. Now an experienced, world class restoration artist in this niche field, she relishes the challenge of returning rare cinema posters in poor condition to their former glory.

In 2014 television beckoned once again, although this time around Tanya was in front of the camera. Her program, Tanya’s Art Studio, aired daily in 2015 on Rogers TV Durham. As Community Producer for the show, Tanya demonstrated do-it-yourself art projects in pencil, acrylic and watercolour. Viewers enjoyed cheerfully presented lessons in drawing pets, painting portraits and experimenting with acrylic mediums.

A skilled watercolour painter, Tanya opened www.originalsportsart.ca, to focus on her commissioned sports art work. Inspired by athletic accomplishment, Tanya paints active people and triathlon athletes, capturing their passion for sport in her work. Bicycle fans warmly welcomed her booth to the 2016 Toronto International Bike Show. As well, Original Sports Art sponsored a 2016 team of Whitby Girls Softball Association players.

Her medium has evolved from primarily painting to sculpture. In 2014 and 2015 Tanya started introducing relief carving and mixed media to her paintings with hair, epoxy resin and drywall compound. 2016 work involves creating sculptures made of paper, encaustic paint and LED lights. With a nod to the Art Nouveau aesthetic, her shapes are organic and whimsical.

Petruk’s current studio production is carving and painting ostrich eggs and goose eggs.

Tanya also designs artwork for license and surface design for use on paper goods, houswares and apparel. Check out her collection of licensable art designs at Society6 and licensing.pixels.com.
